On November 5th 2012, my wife gave birth to our first child. During the pregnancy I decided that I would write about the experience. Every week since I have documented all of the events that took place throughout this time, along with my thoughts on them. Now that I can confirm that our baby is happy and healthy, I will share those thoughts with you.
Week 20 – FEELING the Baby
It wasn’t that long ago that Jess started to look like she was pregnant and not like someone who had one too many dumplings. It was something she was adjusting to and is now even starting to get used to it. However now not only is Jess looking pregnant, but now she is feeling pregnant as well.
The first time we noticed anything was when I went to hug her and I had to move my arms up a little to get them all the way around her. Then she felt the effects herself when she went to put her face close to a mirror in order to apply makeup and her stomach got in the way. Then her stomach started getting in the way of other things. She can’t reach her shoes now for example. When rolling over on the couch she now has to be careful because her momentum now builds to a point where she can actually fall off the couch. Here are a few more effects of Jessica being pregnant:
- She gets winded going down stairs
- She occasionally needs help removing clothes
- She forgets doing/saying/hearing things
- She is starting to waddle
- She occasionally loses her balance while standing up
- She can stop peeing
- Two words; stomach hair
- Three more words; really big boobs (that I can’t touch)
This week we also had yet another doctors appointment. Everything is normal again. We can see all of the limbs and eyes and everything. Essentially we saw everything that we saw the last time, only a little bigger. However the real news came later at night. Right before she went to sleep she was just laying on her side when she started feeling the baby move (apparently lying down wakes babies up). She called me over to see if I can feel it. This has happened before. For a while I would always think I felt something but it turned out to just be gas or something. This time however, for the first time, I felt my son in my wife’s stomach. It felt like a rapid tapping, as if he was playing the bongos on her uterus. As a father-to-be it was a very emotional moment to literally feel your baby moving for the first time ever. However, as a person this may be the freakiest thing I’ve ever felt. To have your hand on someone’s stomach, then feel something on the inside, and know that it is a living thing pushing back is beyond crazy. My mind kept taking me back to Alien when the alien comes out of the guys stomach. I’ve never been so terrified and happy at the same time, and I expect to reach a new extreme of the same feelings in roughly four months.
Holy crap I’m going to be a dad in four months!
