On November 5th 2012, my wife gave birth to our first child. During the pregnancy I decided that I would write about the experience. Every week since I have documented all of the events that took place throughout this time, along with my thoughts on them. Now that I can confirm that our baby is happy and healthy, I will share those thoughts with you.
Week 25 – Glucose to Call (Get it?)
The current craving is milano cookies and it’s time for another doctor visit. This one is a little different as it is to test her for gestational diabetes. The main part of this involves Jess drinking a small bottle of essentially pure glucose. She is instructed not to eat anything within 12 hours of taking the appointment and then has to finish it in under 5 minutes. Then, exactly one hour after she finishes it she must have her blood taken for the test.
This is an issue for so many reasons. First off she can’t help but have a late meal, so we were immediately on the wrong track when she had dinner 11 hours before the appointment. She also has an issue with chugging anything, so we were worried that she would not be able to make it in the allotted time. Third, she absolutely hates getting her blood taken. Fourth, one of the possible side effects of the drink is nausea, and if she throws up we have to try it again. This has all the making of a fantastic visit.
Running a little late as always we are in the car before Jess gets a chance to drink the bottle. Why not add car sickness to the mix. She has her vomit bag ready just in case. I’m convinced she is going to blow. She takes the first tiny sip and surprisingly it tastes like Hi-C. “Not the worst thing I’ve drank voluntarily” she says. That makes me a little curious but whatever. It’s not carbonated or anything so she gradually sips and sips her way through it in two minutes. Much better than I expected. Now we just have to kill an hour before the blood test. This would turn out to be easy as we’d be stuck in the waiting room for what seemed like an eternity. Because she couldn’t eat they gave her a Monday morning appointment instead of the usual afternoon appointment. Big mistake as she was probably less likely to eat in the morning anyway. Monday morning is the busiest time at this office. Overbooked and nowhere to sit. Tuesday afternoons are so easy. In and out. We had a serious case of the Mondays.
Everything turns out fine and now we get to see Alex again. At this point he is just way too big for the space he is occupying. His feet are basically in his face and he’s playing with them with his hands. I guess you have to occupy yourself in there somehow. With just about 3 months to go he is going to start getting bigger a lot quicker now. This also means Jess will start getting bigger as well.
Yup, another fantastic visit
