Strikeforce: TATE vs. ROUSEY Quick Picks!

Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey tonight on Showtime! First time i’ve ever been more interested in the ladies then the rest of the card. Besides being pretty these two are nasty in the cage. Their looks might get the casual fans to watch but their skills are what keeps them watching. I’m interested to see if Ronda can back up all the trash talk or will Tate be too much too soon for the rising star… Here are my quick picks for tonight.

Scott Smith vs. Lumumba Sayers

Scott Smith’s chin will be tested in this one. Will he get his shot in before? I’m thinking no. Sayers via KO round 1.

Jacare Souza vs. Bristol Marunde

Last minute replacement Bristol Marunde should be leaving early as well. Jacare will be back in the W column after a quick submission. Souza via Submission round 1.

Paul Daley vs. Kazuo Misaki

I’m guessing this is like batting practice for Paul Daley. You need a guy to fight the winner of Woodley and Marquardt and who else is there? Daley via KO round 1.

Josh Thompson vs. KJ Noons

Just basing this off the fact that KJ has looked good in his last outing and Thompson hasn’t fought in awhile, I’ll go with Noons. I think Noons seemed to put it all together in his last fight and think Thompson will have cage rust. Noons by Decision.

Miesha Tate vs. Ronda Rousey

As much as I want to pick Miesha here based on experience and skills something in my gut keeps me thinking Rousey will win. I don’t know if its hype, But she’s made me a believer just listening to her for the past couple months. Based on the little amount of fighting i’ve seen she looks dominant. Is she fighting the top talent though? I’m not sure. She has dominated everyone she’s fought though so it’s hard not to believe her. If she can do to Tate what she’s done to everyone else I think she can be a legit threat to a returning Cyborg. I see Ronda taking some shots but getting Tate to the ground. I think Ronda will be too big and too strong for Tate. Ronda via Armbar? round 2. (I’m hoping for a draw. Let’s do it all over again! Haha)

Can Ronda add another armbar to the resume?

Quick Picks for Prelims.

Sarah Kaufman vs. Alexis Davis: Kaufman via TKO round 2.

Carlos Fodor vs. Pat Healy: Fodor via KO round 3.

Ryan Couture vs. Conor Heun: Couture by Split Decision.

Roger Bowling vs. Brandon Saling: Bowling by TKO round 2.

The "New" Bantamweight champion?

Watch the Promo!

That’s it for me. Enjoy the fights!

I love FREE fights! UFC is back on FX tonight. We finally get to see the 125ers in action! It’s the beginning of the flyweight tournament to crown the UFC’s first flyweight champ. It’s also the debut for top flyweights Ian “Uncle Creepy” Mccall and Yasuhiro Urushitani. The main event has great potential. Alves vs. Kampmann is sure to be a back and forth brawl! This card looks to be a solid one and I’m excited for a night of great fights. Here are my quick picks for UFC on FX: Alves vs. Kampmann.

Court Mcgee vs. Constantinos Philippou:

I see Court taking this one to the ground and grinding out Constaninos to a Decision. Mcgee via Decision.

Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson vs. Ian “Uncle Creepy” Mccall:

This is my pick for fight of the night. We already know what Mighty Mouse can do at 35 in the UFC. Now we get to see him at his natural weight class. Mccall is no joke as well. He’s a tough guy and really can beat you in a lot of ways. I see this fight going to the additional round and see Demetrious Johnson winning via Split Decision. Even after the sudden death round I see this one being a toss up.

Joseph Benavidez vs. Yasuhiro Urushitani:

This fight will not go for very long. Benavidez has too much power and I’m curious to see how much faster he can possibly be at 125. He already was a top guy at 135, I’m thinking he dominates this fight and does the same in the final. Benavidez via KO round 2.

Joe B fights are always exciting!

Tiago Alves vs. Martin Kampmann:

I see this as being a pretty entertaining back and forth battle. I see Kampmann connecting on more of the shots but see Alves landing the bigger strikes. I want to say Alves takes this match by KO but I think Kampmann avoids the KO shot and takes Alves down. As they go deeper into the fight I see Kampmann keeping Alves on the ground and eventually submitting him. Kampmann via submission round 5.

Catch the prelims on Fuel TV. Here are my quick picks for those fights.

James Te Huna vs. Aaron Rosa: Rosa via TKO round 2

Anthony Perosh vs. Nick Penner: Penner via TKO round 3

Cole Miller vs. Steven Siler: Siler by Split Decision

Kyle Noke vs. Andrew Craig: Kyle Noke by Submission round 2

Tj Waldburger vs. Jake Hecht: Hecht by Unanimous Decision

Mackens Semerzier vs. Daniel Pineda: Semerzier by TKO round 2

Oli Thompson vs. Shawn Jordan: Jordan via 2nd round Submission

First Flyweight Champion?

FIGHT OF THE NIGHT: Demetrious Johnson vs. Ian Mccall

KO OF THE NIGHT: Joseph Benavidez

That’s it for me. Enjoy The Fights!

Professional Athletes That Would Make Great Wrestlers (WWE/TNA STARS ETC)

Earlier this week Tim Byrdak of the Mets broke out “Hulk Hogan“. Following up on Mike’s post “NFL Players in Wrestling” (CLICK HERE) I wanted to make a list of some athletes I think could make great wrestlers. Assuming these guys already have that athletic ability I will focus more on character/look rather than in ring skills 🙂

Brian Wilson

He’s the closer for the Giants but would be a great opener for any wrestling show. Honestly I would watch Wilson do anything (Rap, Sock Puppet Show, Brush his teeth). The guy is flat out interesting.

His beard gives him the look. His brain makes him outstanding!

Chael Sonnen

If UFC star Chael Sonnen is interested in a career in the WWE after he is done fighting i’m thinking he can have it. I could just post videos without saying a word and I’d think you’d know what I was talking about after a couple minutes. If the WWE ever goes through a rough patch in ratings, My money is on Chael Sonnen to come to the rescue. I’m sure he’ll be the most likely to get a call from Vince McMahon when his Mixed Martial Arts career is over.

“The American Gangster, The Pride of West Linn, Oregon”

Can’t just have one video of Chael.

Nyjer Morgan

Perfect guy for the Royal Rumble. He Doesn’t mind taking on an entire team.

Sean Avery

Sean Avery is easily one of the most disliked players in the NHL. He likes to fight like a lot of hockey players but he also can sting you with his mic skills. A perfect heel in the wrestling biz.

Avery plays the “Heel” well

Clinton Portis

Wrestlng has years of corny gimmicks. Now let me introduce to you, Clinton Portis.

Clinton in “Character”

Jeremy Lin and Tim Tebow (Tag Team)

Every wrestling promotion has the face or babyface good guy. How could you get any nicer than a Tag Team of Tebow and Lin? They could be “The Good Guys”. This type of  team also seems to be hated as well so it works either way!

Delonte West

People say wrestling has become more of a Soap Opera over the years. What player would have a better storyline then Delonte West? A relationship with Lebron Jame’s mom, Application to Home Depot, Being homeless during a season? Great stuff already!

“I wonder what Lebron’s mom is doing after the game?”

Anderson Varejao and Joakim Noah (Tag Team)

Both are tall and lanky basketball players with crazy hair. They might not be on the same team in the NBA but I think they’d make a pretty interesting looking Tag Team.

Twins separated at birth?

Ron Artest “Metta WorldPeace”

Google “Ron Artest”.

Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco (Tag Team)

This would make a lot of sense. Not only would they think they where better than everyone, They’d also have to deal with each others drama. Who would turn on the other quicker?

“How Cool Are We?” “People hate on us because we are better than them”

Here are some TWEETS from friends on “What athletes would make great wrestlers”:

Ok that’s it for me! Hope you enjoyed.

UFC 144 Japan: Edgar vs. Henderson Predictions!

Not only is it NBA All Star Weekend, We have the return of UFC to Japan!. I’m guessing this one has one of the most exciting main events in awhile. Edgar vs. Henderson could go down as fight of the year. Here are some QUICK predictions for tonight’s fights.

Pettis vs. Lauzon

I’m going to have to go with Pettis here. I think he is more well rounded and after the way he handled Jeremy Stephens you can see he’s putting it all together. Pettis via Unanimous Decision.

Anthony Pettis and "The Showtime Kick"

Hioki vs. Palaszewski

I was not impressed with Hioki’s debut against Roop. Like many others I felt he lost that decision. Bart is coming off a great showing with a TKO of Tyson Griffin. I think he’ll do the same to Hioki. Palaszewki 2nd round KO

Okami vs. Boetsch

After the Silva fight in Brazil I wasn’t sure I could ever pick Okami again. Let’s be honest though, He looked awful because he was fighting Anderson Silva. Losing to the spider happens a lot so we’ll give him a pass. That being said Okami is usually good for a Unanimous Decision. When I first saw this match up I thought Boetsch could take it. Since he’s dropped down to middle weight he’s been a beast. Last night I saw them weigh in and wow I didn’t realize how much bigger Okami was then Boetsch. I figured since Boetsch had been a Light Heavyweight they’d be close in size. Now I’m kind of thinking Okami by decision but to make it interesting I’ll stick with Boetsch getting the victory by Split Decision.

Akiyama vs. Shields

Sexyama and Shields are most likely fighting for their contracts. I think this is a bad fight for Sexyama. I see Jake taking him down and keeping him there winning by Decision. Shields UD.

Can Shields return to form?

Hunt vs. Kongo

Well I think the fight that everyone is expecting won’t happen. I don’t see Kongo standing with Hunt. If they do stand I see a Hunt KO. I don’t believe that will happen though. Similar to how Kongo took down Mitrione in the 3rd round of their fight I see Kongo doing that pretty early on with Hunt and getting the TKO. Kongo via TKO round 2.

Rampage vs. Bader

Before I found out that Rampage missed weight I had him winning by KO. Now I hear he has an injury and the weight cut had a huge effect on him. You are probably thinking I’m going with Bader now. I’m not. I like Bader and think he has the power to KO anyone but the mental side of fighting “Rampage” Jackson is where I think the difference is. I don’t know if Bader has that confidence he can beat Jackson. I think Bader looks to play it safe and gets caught. Rampage KO 2nd round.

Would love to see an epic Rampage Slam!

Edgar vs. Henderson

Not only may this be fight of the night but I also believe it could be fight of the year. It’s hard to choose between these two because I like them so much. Either could be great champions in a stacked 55 division. It’s hard to go against Frankie when you see all that he’s gone through while still winning fights. Some say he takes a lot of damage and that will catch up to him but so far so good. He has the best heart in the UFC. He’s been beating guys he hasn’t supposed to for awhile now. He deserves more attention then he gets. Henderson is equally as impressive. Not only was he great in the WEC but he has been in beast mode since losing that decision to Anthony Pettis. He’s big and athletic and can probably match Frankies gas tank. As hard as it is to pick someone to win in this fight I have to go with Edgar. I feel he’ll be able to get in and out and use combinations staying away from the powerful Henderson. I believe that these two can be the next great rivalry and it wouldn’t shock me to see either win. Edgar by Split Decision.

Edgar vs. Henderson II anyone?? HAHA with Frankie's luck.

Fight Of The Night: Edgar vs. Henderson

My Predictions For Tonight

Dunk Contest: Jeremy Evans #LetJeremyDunk

Why did I pick Jeremy? Because he barely plays and I’m sure he’ll be well rested. Just Kidding. I saw the videos he posted trying to get into the contest and he looks to have some skills.

3 Point Contest: Anthony Morrow

I’m not picking him just because he’s on the Nets (My favorite team) I think he has the perfect shot to win it. If he is hot early there is no chance he loses. Plus he’ll be paying tribute to Net legend Drazen Petrovic by wearing his number 3. How cool is that!

Skills Competition: Deron Williams

“Here’s looking at you Dwight” Where Brooklyn at?

Well that’s it for me. Enjoy the festivities!

Strikeforce should be UFC’s Minor League System

Just like the MLB has it’s minor league system I believe the UFC would benefit from making Strikeforce it’s minor league system. Here are my quick thoughts on why I think it could work.

Minor League Deals:

Fighters could sign Minor League deals with incentives for if/when they got called up to the UFC. Bring in more prospects and keep around guys that fans love. Instead of cutting a fighter after a couple loses they could be sent down to Strikeforce. What fighter wouldn’t feel better about at least getting the chance to stick around and work his way back. Having Strikeforce means more roster spots. Guys don’t have to worry as much about losing their jobs.

Why Showtime should agree to this:

I don’t know about you but I’ll watch pretty much any MMA. I spent a nice summer day sitting inside on my computer watching BAMMA, Bellator prelims on and then Strikeforce. I catch any promotion I can that gets streamed online (Shark Fights, BAMMA) I believe people will still tune into Showtime and watch despite Strikeforce being the UFC’s minor league. When you think about it every promotion other then UFC is a minor league anyway. Showtime could continue to focus on the “Rising Stars”(Challengers) and also capitalize on the “UFC” names.

Why it makes sense for Zuffa:

Unless Zuffa continues to want to buy their competitors I think it makes sense for them to keep Strikeforce around. How hard is it to compete with the number one promotion when they also own the number two promotion. What guys are these competitors going to get if Zuffa continues to have this huge talent pool. Let’s face it, If you consider yourself one of the best fighters in the world and you’re not even in the number two promotion how can you be taken serious. The UFC will become what the NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB is. The only Professional League. A minor league would give them the opportunity to keep all the smaller promotions small promotions.

Quick Thoughts:

I’d get rid of all the belts except for the women’s division. Instead of getting a belt I’d do “Light Weight” of the year or something down that line. What’s the point in having a belt that gets vacated all the time.

They could develop the women’s divisions. More and more girls will get into MMA if they know Women’s MMA has a place in Strikeforce’s future. The only way you’ll get deeper divisions is if these young girls see there is an opportunity to make it. Without Strikeforce, Women’s progression in MMA faces a harder road.

And lastly,If the Showtime deal doesn’t happen i’d hope they would consider looking elsewhere or even streaming cards online. More free fights please!

Hope you enjoyed this. I don’t consider myself a journalist or even a blogger. I just enjoy MMA and love to talk about it. Check out my predictions during fight week’s and I’ll post some MMA related posts when I get the itch. Thanks.
