God Of War: Ascension Multiplayer Demo (NYCC)

Along with all of the panels and displays at the New York Comic Con, I also got to check out some upcoming video games. One of the games I’m looking forward too is the fourth entry into the God of War franchise, God of War: Ascension. Fortunately, Sony had a booth showing off the new multiplayer element to God of War, and I got to check it out.

By now the premise of both the game and the multiplayer is no big secret. Set, six months after Kratos murdered his wife and child (oh I’m sorry did I forget to mention SPOILERS?) and shortly after selling his soul to Aries, Kratos sets out to defeat the three furies in order to break his bond with Aries. This adds up to a Kratos who is more human and relatable, but also still has the Blades of Chaos and can whoop some serious ass.

The multiplayer, on the other hand, puts you in the shoes of the troops that Kratos either controlled or fought against. You start out as just an ordinary man, until you sell you soul to one of four deities (Zeus, Ares, Hades or Poseidon). Your choice determines your combat style as well as what abilities you can earn. The mode I played is called “Favor of the Gods.” Two teams of four soldiers (serving either Sparta or Troy) fight to earn points (or “Favor”) by achieving kills, collecting orbs and claiming (and defending) territory on the map. The goal is to earn enough Favor to acquire the Spear of Olympus and (in my case) destroy the Titan cyclops Polyphemus.

This is as good as God of War multiplayer gets

The first thing I can to do was customize my character. This including choosing my armor, primary weapon (sword or mallet for me) and magic ability. Once the match starts its all beat ’em up. Yes you can dodge and block, but during my session it was all about striking first and keeping it up. There is a dash that gets you out of trouble and aside from not having the Blades of Chaos it’s just like playing the solo mission. This includes quick time kills that are even more satisfying than normal when performed on the person standing next to you. The map is on the small side, which is good given the limited numbers of players. While the moments with several players on the same screen were fun, it was those rare times where I ended up one on one with another player that were the most enjoyable for me. The combat is quick, simple and satisfying. Imagine if someone next to you was playing as Zeus at the end of God of War 3. Yeah, it feels like that.

The only real complaint I have is that the camera doesn’t quite work with multiplayer. There are arrows identifying where other players and objects are, but overall I had a bit of a hard time finding the action. I spent a little too much time looking for someone to fight. When I did though, God of War: Ascension’s multiplayer gets a lot right.

God of War: Ascension is set to be released exclusively on the PS3 on March 12th of 2013.

Domino Confirmed For Deadpool Game (NYCC)

At this point we all know that High Moon Studios is making a Deadpool game due to come out in 2013 right? Well at the Marvel Video Games panel at the New York Comic Con we received an update on how the game was progressing.

Everything looks great, the combat is coming into shape and blah blah blah. Thankfully Deadpool himself decided to crash the panel, start a dance party, and announce that none other than Domino is confirmed to make her first video game appearance.  A fellow mercenary, Domino is also known for having a relationship with Cable, and you can’t have a Deadpool game without Cable being involved somehow. By the way, the game will be rated M for mature. That means cursing and boobs and blood and guts! They also showed this highlight reel of Deadpool’s appearance in San Diego:

Some other notes from the Marvel Video Games panel:

-The Amazing Spider-Man game will come to the Wii U in the spring. It will include all of the DLC, will have optional motion controls and the touchscreen controller with act as the cellphone hub during gameplay. This is similar to how the navigation and gadget controls are being applied to the Arkham City Armored Edition.

(On a side note, I watched some people run through a brief demo of Arkham City on the Wii U. Graphically it looks just like the current version. The armor’s main function seems to be providing a brief but large impact in combat, electrocuting enemies and adding range. It only works when fully charged. Gadgets like the remote batarang and detective vision make you look at the touchscreen. This gave a lot of players fits as it’s against everything we know as gamers to look away from the giant tv in our face to look at a smaller one below us. The controller itself takes some getting used to but I’m sure that after a little while you get used to it.)

-Marvel Pinball will be debuting a Civil War version by the end of the year. In it, you pick a side (Captain America or Iron Man) and the object while playing is to recruit allies. The side you select determines what moments play out from the series.

-There was some new footage shown for the free to play MMO, Marvel Heroes. Among it was the announcement of three new characters: Nova, Luke Cage and Jean Grey (as Phoenix). The video also showed a glimpse of Rocket Racoon from Guardians of the Galaxy, which got a big response from the crowd.

Ghostbusters Goggles And More From Mattel (NYCC)

For the second straight year Mattel had a lot to show off at the New York Comic Con. Among their usual assortment of figurines and show exclusives was a peak of the latest addition to their collection of Ghostbusters equipment. To go along with the PKE meter and  ghost trap, you will soon be able to get your hands on the  goggles from the movie! Mattel did another great job recreating the classic look and you can expect to see them available sometime next year.

Here are some more pictures from Mattel’s display including DC, WWE, Masters of the Universe, Ghostbusters and the hoverboard from Back to the Future 2:

Professional Athletes That Would Make Great Wrestlers (WWE/TNA STARS ETC)

Earlier this week Tim Byrdak of the Mets broke out “Hulk Hogan“. Following up on Mike’s post “NFL Players in Wrestling” (CLICK HERE) I wanted to make a list of some athletes I think could make great wrestlers. Assuming these guys already have that athletic ability I will focus more on character/look rather than in ring skills 🙂

Brian Wilson

He’s the closer for the Giants but would be a great opener for any wrestling show. Honestly I would watch Wilson do anything (Rap, Sock Puppet Show, Brush his teeth). The guy is flat out interesting.

His beard gives him the look. His brain makes him outstanding!

Chael Sonnen

If UFC star Chael Sonnen is interested in a career in the WWE after he is done fighting i’m thinking he can have it. I could just post videos without saying a word and I’d think you’d know what I was talking about after a couple minutes. If the WWE ever goes through a rough patch in ratings, My money is on Chael Sonnen to come to the rescue. I’m sure he’ll be the most likely to get a call from Vince McMahon when his Mixed Martial Arts career is over.

“The American Gangster, The Pride of West Linn, Oregon”

Can’t just have one video of Chael.

Nyjer Morgan

Perfect guy for the Royal Rumble. He Doesn’t mind taking on an entire team.

Sean Avery

Sean Avery is easily one of the most disliked players in the NHL. He likes to fight like a lot of hockey players but he also can sting you with his mic skills. A perfect heel in the wrestling biz.

Avery plays the “Heel” well

Clinton Portis

Wrestlng has years of corny gimmicks. Now let me introduce to you, Clinton Portis.

Clinton in “Character”

Jeremy Lin and Tim Tebow (Tag Team)

Every wrestling promotion has the face or babyface good guy. How could you get any nicer than a Tag Team of Tebow and Lin? They could be “The Good Guys”. This type of  team also seems to be hated as well so it works either way!

Delonte West

People say wrestling has become more of a Soap Opera over the years. What player would have a better storyline then Delonte West? A relationship with Lebron Jame’s mom, Application to Home Depot, Being homeless during a season? Great stuff already!

“I wonder what Lebron’s mom is doing after the game?”

Anderson Varejao and Joakim Noah (Tag Team)

Both are tall and lanky basketball players with crazy hair. They might not be on the same team in the NBA but I think they’d make a pretty interesting looking Tag Team.

Twins separated at birth?

Ron Artest “Metta WorldPeace”

Google “Ron Artest”.

Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco (Tag Team)

This would make a lot of sense. Not only would they think they where better than everyone, They’d also have to deal with each others drama. Who would turn on the other quicker?

“How Cool Are We?” “People hate on us because we are better than them”

Here are some TWEETS from friends on “What athletes would make great wrestlers”:

Ok that’s it for me! Hope you enjoyed.

WrestleMania XXIX to be held at MetLife Stadium

MetLife Stadium may be getting the Super Bowl in 2014, but they’ll be getting the biggest event in wrestling first.

Several sources are reporting what has been rumored for a while now, that MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey will host WrestleMania XXIX in 2013. This year WrestleMania, the signature event for the WWE, will be on April 1st at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida. The main event was booked at last year’s WrestleMania, and will put current poster boy John Cena against Hall of Famer, The Rock. WWE is likely hoping this match draws as much hype as when The Rock went against Hulk Hogan 11 years ago. Also rumored to be on the card is Chris Jericho vs CM Punk (likely to be a much better match), Triple H trying to end the Undertaker’s WrestleMania undefeated streak (for the 3rd time), and Big Show vs Shaquille O’neal (ugh).

Hopefully it's not too cold for an ice cream bar

With the main facts for this year’s event out there it leaves plenty to speculate on for next year in New Jersey. First off, WWE has had no problem scheduling big events outdoors, Safeco Field in Seattle, Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and so on. However WrestleMania has always been an early April/late March event and anyone that’s been to a Yankees or Mets opening day game can tell you it can get pretty cold outside. Throw in the fact that this 3 hour event will be starting at 8:00pm and you can bet WWE blankets will be a big seller (forget about the oiled up dudes wrestling in their underwear). March 31st is the most likely date for WrestleMania, but I’m curious if they push it up to April 7th, or even the 14th to at least take snow out of the question. As someone who got married outside in late March, I can’t bring up the weather factor enough.

Next is the card itself. It’s possible that we get some news on a main event as early as this April, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make some guesses now. Coincidence or not, recently some of the booking in WrestleMania seems to relate to the venue. Shawn Michaels first took on the Undertaker in his home state of Texas, CM Punk got his biggest push at Money in the Bank in his native Chicago, and this year the Rock, a former Miami Hurricane, will headline against John Cena in his home town. No, I don’t think that Long Island’s Zach Ryder will headline. However Mick Foley could play a big part in it. Maybe a guest referee as he isn’t exactly in ring shape. You can bet that the usual suspects will all have roles. Triple H is the closest thing to a local superstar. Cena and Punk both get huge reactions (although for different reasons). More than any other event, WrestleMania feeds off of nostalgia. If the Undertaker’s streak is still alive (which would be smart, but something tells me it’s not going happen), Chris Jericho stands out as a name that could draw headlines, since no young lion is ready right now.

Check out my Pythons!

The other question is celebrity appearances. WrestleMania has always been full of those, and often they are in the ring. Snookie, Floyd Mayweather, and Lawrence Taylor have already had matches, with Shaq likely next on the list. Could Mike Tyson, who’s being put into the celebrity wing of the WWE Hall of Fame make an appearance? Jay-Z will pretty much do anything for a check. I think the most likely celebrity to actually be in a match however is former Giant Michael Strahan. He is not that far past his retirement, he’s in great shape, and he would get a huge push from fans in his team’s stadium. All he needs is someone to make him look good (hello Jack Swagger!) and we’re set. Have any predictions of your own? Think I’m out of my mind? Leave a comment and be heard!

Spider-Douche at the Giants Parade and other Super Bowl notes

Yesterday the New York Giants celebrated their second Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots in 4 years with a parade through the canyon of heroes in Manhattan. By now a lot of you have probably seen this lovely Giants fan. But you probably missed this Spider-Man wannabe that tried to creep into a window filled with women:

A few other Super Bowl notes from a Patriots fan living in New York (yeah you heard me):

Did you notice how little the non-game story lines were brought up during the game? The Tyree catch was shown once before the game started. Tyree himself was only shown once and that was not after the Manningham catch at the end that couldn’t have resembled it any more. Gisele was also only shown once early, although that is by Brady’s request. Meanwhile Peyton Manning, the future hall of fame Quarterback drawing a ton of attention for his feud with the Colts, brother of Eli Manning during the Superbowl in his team’s stadium, was not shown at all. Surprising effort by NBC to keep the cameras on the field. Even Gronkowski’s only got brought up a few times during the game.

As long as we are talking about Gisele, do you think Tom Brady ripped her a new one for throwing the team under the bus (seemingly to reporters with Vince Wilfork’s wife next to her). Forget about the fact that Brady got called for intentional grounding on the Patriots’ first offensive play of the game for a safety, or that he underthrew Gronkowski leading to an interception, or that he could have made a better throw to a wide open Welker that could have sealed a win in the 4th. She should know better. The Giselle curse lives on.

Finally, anyone else notice what a mediocre experience this Super Bowl was from top to bottom? The game was okay. Nobody played outstanding. Nobody was terrible. The biggest play was an over the shoulder sideline catch (great play, but no helmet catch by any means). The winning touchdown was scored by mistake. The commercials were mostly tame, and the ones that did stand out we had already seen so there was no wow factor (thanks internet). Madonna was meh. There just weren’t any moments that really stood out from this Super Bowl. Well, except for Aaron Hernandez’s touchdown celebration. Maybe the most sneaky good celebration ever. I had to watch it again before I realized he was breaking into a vault to do his normal “make it rain” dance. Just fantastic.

Mike gets a rematch with Jerry “The King” Lawler

The last time we met up with Jerry Lawler things did not go so well (see here). With the Royal Rumble this weekend it seemed like a perfect time for Jerry and myself to settle our differences in the squared circle. We needed an assist from WWE 12 to make this happen of course, but a match is a match. Enjoy

STS Tournament: Melvin Glover vs Robert Ovalle

Over the weekend we attended the 2011 MMA World Expo at the Javits Center. The big feature of the day was the final round of the STS Tournament. With traditional MMA fighting still not allowed in New York, STS bends the rules by having 3 rounds of fighting each featuring a different fighting style. Round 1 is Muay Thai (S- for Striking), round 2 is wrestling (T- for Take Downs), and round 3 is No-Gi Jiu Jitsu (S- for Submissions).

It’s a pretty interesting format and we have two of the final matches from the day. First is the 175lb division featuring Melvin Glover and Robert Ovalle. Enjoy

Venture Bros. Press Hour Highlights (NYCC)

Aside from having two of the coolest names in entertainment, Venture Bros creators Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer are easily two of the most entertaining people I’ve ever encountered during a media session. At the New York Comic Con they talked about the upcoming 5th season, but not without going a but off topic at times. Check out the highlights below, and let’s also appreciate the fact that they showed up in tuxedos.
